Intensive English Program (IEP)

The Intensive English Program is a full-time English language training program offered in 16-week sessions beginning in January, May and the end of August. You can come for just one session, or stay for longer – our multi-level program ensures that you will have new challenges and new courses to select from as your English improves. When you successfully complete three courses at one level, you will earn a UBC Certificate in English Language for that level.

Our 16 weeks sessions align with the UBC academic calendar to allow for a smooth transition for students granted conditional admission to UBC degree programs.

IEP 8 Week Option          

The ELI offers an 8 week IEP option which allows for more flexibility in start dates.  Each 16 week session has two 8 week terms.  Students who take an 8 week term will have access to the same courses and resources as the 16 week session students. 

English for Business Communications

This program is designed to build your confidence in speaking, listening, reading and writing English in business contexts. You will increase your vocabulary and practise using Business English in everyday business situations on the telephone, and in meetings, presentations or negotiations. You will also develop your Business English skills by writing e-mails, memos and business letters, participating in simulated meetings and role-plays, and discussing case studies. Some class activities you may do include examining cross-cultural business practices and attending field trips.

English and University Culture

The English and University Culture Program is a 6 week, full-time program, designed for international university students looking to learn English through the exploration of North American university culture, particularly in comparison to their own.

Summer Institute

Speaking Clearly

We all have accents and they are part of what makes our multicultural environment so colourful. Sometimes, however, our pronunciation can make it difficult for others to easily understand what we are saying. This course will help students to speak clearly by providing intensive practice in the processes of connected speech and the articulation of individual sounds.

The course takes place face-to-face in small groups of up to 15 students per class so that the individual attention necessary for speech intelligibility can be given. It takes 15 hours to complete, divided into five morning classes.
